The students from Lyceum “Lucian Blaga”, Iargara, Moldova participated in the project Earth Measure with their peers from: South Africa, Pakistan, Palestine, Moldova, U.S. and Romania. The project was mentored by Mr. Steve Weissburg from the USA. The goal of the project was to reproduce the experiment of Eratosthenes and estimate the circumference of the earth by measuring the shadow of a stick. The activities were divided over a four weeks period.
On the day of the equinox, on March 18th, students from the 10th grade: Magla Serghei, Porubin David, Mocanu Sergiu, Melniciuc Victor and Topala Nicoleta directed by the geography teacher Chele Ion and the English teacher Ina Porubin measured the length of a meter stick’s shadow at noon in local time(12:15 p.m.), when the sun was directly over the equator. After that students determined the latitude and solved a proportion using the distance from the equator to calculate the Earth’s circumference. After the calculations, the students sent all of the measurements to EDMODO. “ The results from all the schools were extremely accurate, using just a meter stick and the sun's shadow”-commented Steve Weissburg.
The next project in which students participated was FOLK COSTUMES AROUND THE GLOBE with their peers from Indonesia, Cameroon, India and Romania. During the project implementation, students looked for information about national Moldovan costumes and local traditions. They found activities which were held in community that showcased these costumes and traditions. After they gathered the information, Felicia Baraghin and David Porubin with the guidance of the librarian Hariton Valentina and their English teacher Ina Porubin made a video about Moldovan Traditions. After that they placed the video on the forum Youth Voice, where they took the first place under the category Creative Arts.
- The first week February 29th- March 4th teachers signed up and explained the project to students. Students signed up on Edmodo. Teachers assigned students the tasks.
- Second week – March 7th- 11th Students introduced themselves, shared information about their school and their location on Edmodo, they created their presentation using Powtoon.
- Third week- March 14th -18th Students did a practice measurement early in the week.
- Fourth week – March 21st – March 25th Students reported their data and calculations on Edmodo.
